MY CHILD & ME SERIES (EPISODE 5): CHILDREN AS TESTS FROM ALLAH
Dear parent, do you ever think of your child as a test from Allah? You see, whatever thing Allah has given us in this life, is a test from Him; to see whether we are grateful or ungrateful for that blessing, and whether we use it in accordance to how Allah wants it to be used. Children are one of those tests in life. As Allah says;
“Your wealth and your children are but a trial, and Allah has with Him a great reward.” (Surah at-Taghabun: 15)
Thus, just like any test, we need to remember that we will be accountable for this test given to us on the day of Judgement.. Did we hold this amaanah right? Did we give them the proper Islamic parenting? Did we treat them with love, respect and kindness? Did we prepare them for the hereafter.. attaining Jannah and staying away from Jahannam? Now, ask yourself those questions dear parent... Are the answers in the affirmative or not?
Also, once a parent realizes the point above, there will be a profound change in regards to how one raises, relates and deals with their children. If we pass this test, Allah rewards it greatly and if we don’t, then we are punished for it, we seek Allah’s refuge.
Lastly, we tend to forget that the blessing of children, which others may not have, are tests from Allah, and thus we become sooo absorbed in it, just like we get absorbed with wealth that we forget it is a test from Allah. At other times, we try to completely avoid this test by avoiding our responsibilities altogether... attending to the emotional, physical needs of the child. If we end up neglecting these responsibilities and failing the test altogether, then we miss a great opportunity to earn reward from Allah.
The journey of parenting requires a lot of hard work, but one of the most rewarding and fulfilling task a person could ever have. An example, a child who memorized and acted upon the Qur’an as a result of being taught and guided by his parents. This same child now goes on to lead others in prayer and teaches them the Qur'an. Imagine the reward of the parents and the fulfillment they will attain just by that small action!
Therefore, we should always remember the points above and try to do our possible best to ensure we are grateful for this test by trying to raise our children in the proper Islamic way. We should also be never neglectful of making du’a to Allah to help us be grateful for this test and fulfill this amaanah the way it deserves to be fulfilled.
